This is a "sketch 8x10" of a painting I'm thinking of on a big scale. The painting in the back is by Arte de Gelder ( a student of Rembrandnt). The painting is in the Dresden 'Old Picture Gallery' and because it is by a student of Rembrandt and it is from an etching by Rembrandt is is considered less than 'Masterful'.
I believe it is a superb painting and should be (as Whistler said) considered on it's own merits?.

Two questions: Is my sketch worth pursuing on a large scale?
Should a painting be considered in the context of the time it is conceived or as Whistler suggested "on it's own merit?".
